Title
Joint network coded-cross layer optimized video streaming over relay satellite channel
In this paper, we focus on the relay satellite channel and propose a solution that combines the advantages of network coding and cross-layer optimization. Specifically, we propose a video streaming scheme that makes use of network coding practically implemented at packet layers to double the throughput and QoEdriven cross-layer optimization for rate adaptation. The reason for the successful combination of the component schemes is the existing trade-off in terms of throughput and QoE, which we identify by analyzing first the performance of each technique separately. Our contribution is not only the proposed novel combined approach for adaptive video-streaming over a satellite channel but also the analytical derivation of suitable metrics. Our results show that our proposed scheme provides an 80% gain in throughput over existent QoE-driven cross layer optimization based approach and 70% gain in QoE over the existent network coding based approach.
